I went inside with my girlfriend looking for a nice quiet place to drink and chat, so we go in to sit down and as soon as we got to the table, the owner shouts us both over and asked us "what we were doing there" so I replied "just here for a drink" and she stared us both dead in the eye and said "no, too young" so we both gave her our IDs stating we have been 18 for months and she stared at them and still exclaimed "too young" for the second time. Knowing we were both of age so as any one who was in this situation I asked " are you serious we are both 18 and I wanted a drink" so she said "Fine Just beer too young for spirits" I have never had such a patronising experience in my entire life and might of ruined my trip to Amsterdam

I would like to say a massive thank you to the lady behind the bar when we arrived and the battery on my brothers wheelchair had failed. She very kindly arranged a taxi for us to transport us back to the P&O ship at the port terminal. Please pass on our sincere thanks as we were stranded and she helped immensely in our time of need.

We visited Amsterdam for eight days in late January and happened to stay in a flat near Cafe Schumich. On our very first night, several of us happened upon this local gem and we’re so glad that we did. We spent the first evening drinking it up with a couple quirky locals and left very late vowing to return before our trip was over. Return we did, every single night that Arlene (the bartender) was working. It’s a funny thing, but ending our evenings with Arlene ended up being everyone’s favorite part of the trip. In just a few short days, Arlene has dazzled us all with her Scottish accent and unconventional delivery of some of the best advice I’ve heard in a decade or two. What a reminder that traveling is about the people along the way, as much as it is about the destination Your Kansas City friends miss you, Arlene! We will see you again very soon! - Tiff, Hailee, Chad, Roxy and Natasha

Friendly and skilled owner. Business already in third generation. Clean interieur, although dark. Which only adds to the feeling of this bar.

What a wonderful bar with wonderful people running it and going to it. We just wanted to find a place to have a beer for not too much money and not too much noise and ended up hearing the most beautiful stories and meeting the people behind it. Eileen the Barkeeper is a True Icon, a wonderful woman with some of the best energies I’ve ever encountered at random. Thank you for a more wonderful evening than I would have imagined. I will be returning! <3

What an amazing place. We arrived just as they opened and the guy behind the bar couldn’t have been more friendly. We planned only a quick beer and ended up staying for another 3 beers and 2 rounds of jenever. This place is super old school.
