Er schijnt niet veel interesse te zijn in historische zaken in Vlaardingen. Van het, al oude, stadhuis aan de Markt bij de Grote Kerk is niet veel te vinden en daardoor zijn er wellicht ook geen reviews. Toch een kleine poging. Vlaardingen heeft een lange historie. Reeds lang voor het begin van de jaartelling leefden er al mensen in deze streek. In de achtste eeuw is er voor het eerst in geschreven bronnen sprake van Vlaardingen. In 1273 krijgt Vlaardingen stadsrechten. De visserij is voor Vlaardingen tot de Tweede Wereldoorlog de belangrijkste bron van inkomsten geweest. Vlaardingen was eeuwenlang het centrum van de Nederlandse haringvisserij, en dankt daaraan haar bijnaam 'Haringstad'. De opbouw van en vele panden in het historische stadscentrum herinneren aan dit roemrijke verleden. Na de Tweede Wereldoorlog zijn echter helaas door gebrek aan historisch besef veel waardevolle panden en stadsgezichten verdwenen. Dit was de directe aanleiding voor de oprichting van de Historische Vereniging Vlaardingen op 20 januari 1967. Van het eerste stadhuis is niet zoveel bekend, de geschiedenis begint zo'n beetje bij de stadsbrand. In 1574 werd Vlaardingen getroffen door een rampzalige stadsbrand, waarbij ook het toenmalige stadhuis ten prooi viel aan de vlammen. Pas zes jaar later, in 1580, werd begonnen aan de herbouw, waarbij gebruik werd gemaakt van de oude, schoongemaakte stenen. Twee jaar later werd het stadhuistorentje bekroond met ‘een cooperen scheepken’, waarmee de herbouw was voltooid. Na afloop van de Tachtigjarige Oorlog nam de welvaart weer toe en was er voldoende geld om het stadhuis te vernieuwen. De Haagse bouwmeester annex beeldhouwer Bartholomeus Drijffhout vervaardigde in 1648 een deel van het bestek voor het nieuwe stadhuis, dat in 1650 werd opgeleverd. In 1825 werd, naar de toentertijd heersende smaak, de gevel van het stadhuis voorzien van een dikke pleisterlaag. Bovendien werden de glas-in-lood ramen en de luiken verwijderd. Toen aan het begin van de 20e eeuw andere opvattingen over oude historische bouwwerken gingen gelden, werd besloten de stadhuisgevel in de oude luister te herstellen. Omdat het aantal inwoners groeide en er meer ambtenaren nodig waren werd in 1953 een nieuw stadhuis gebouwd. In 2013 is het vernieuwde, gerenoveerde stadskantoor Westnieuwland in gebruik genomen. Het Oude Stadhuis op de Markt blijft het middelpunt van allerlei feestelijkheden en plechtigheden. De historie is dus op de Markt bewaard gebleven.

There does not seem to be much interest in historical matters in Vlaardingen. There is not much to be found in the old town hall on the Markt near the Grote Kerk, and therefore there are probably no reviews. Yet a small attempt. Vlaardingen has a long history. Long before the beginning of the era people already lived in this region. In the eighth century Vlaardingen was mentioned for the first time in written sources. In 1273 Vlaardingen gets city rights. Fishing has been the main source of income for Vlaardingen until the Second World War. Vlaardingen was for centuries the center of the Dutch herring fishery, and thanks to this its nickname 'Haringstad'. The building of and many buildings in the historic city center recall this glorious past. After the Second World War, however, many valuable buildings and cityscapes have disappeared due to a lack of historical awareness. This was the direct cause for the establishment of the Historical Association Vlaardingen on January 20, 1967. Not much is known about the first town hall, the history starts with the city fire. In 1574, Vlaardingen was hit by a disastrous city fire, in which the then city hall also fell prey to the flames. Only six years later, in 1580, the rebuilding began, using the old, cleaned stones. Two years later, the Town Hall Museum was crowned with 'a coopering ship', with which the reconstruction was completed. After the Eighty Years' War, prosperity increased again and there was enough money to renovate the town hall. In 1648, the Hague architect Bartholomeus Drijffhout and the sculptor made part of the specifications for the new city hall, which was completed in 1650. In 1825, according to the prevailing taste, the façade of the town hall was provided with a thick layer of plaster. In addition, the stained glass windows and the shutters were removed. At the beginning of the 20th century, when other ideas about old historic buildings came into force, it was decided to restore the town hall facade to its former glory. Because the number of inhabitants grew and more officials were needed, in 1953 a new town hall was built. In 2013, the renovated, renovated Westnieuwland city office came into use. The Old Town Hall on the Markt remains the center of all kinds of festivities and ceremonies. The history has thus been preserved on the Markt.
