β β β β β Unless you are 100% sure that you will not have a problem with a potential purchase, DO NOT BUY ANYTHING from this company!
On 3rd. July, 2018, I had the misfortune to purchase a Solitaire diamond ring from their auction house at a cost of β¬1,254 incl. charges.
Firstly, they dispatched the wrong item to me by courier, then retrieved it, then sent the correct item. On receipt of the ring I had the diamond checked for authentication / certification by a World class organisation in the UK. It was at this point I realized that the diamond was NOT as Veilinghuis De Jager (= VDJ) had described.
The diamond had been βtreated,β hence this should have been declared / written on the description. It was not.
Furthermore, it was described as βColour: H,β which was βway offβ the actual colour of the diamond, which was, in fact, Colour: L. Whilst I would have accepted perhaps one level βoffβ either way, there is a considerable difference in 4 levels away from the correct colour!
To add insult to injury, I politely wrote to VDJ on 26/7/β18 to say that on the basis of the report (attached a copy for their reference), I wanted a full refund, as I would not have bought the ring, had I known that it was enhanced / laser drilled and that it was Colour βL,β as opposed to βHβ as they described.
They responded that βthere are no refundsβ and referred me to their terms and conditions. I found these to be ridiculous and wondered what lawyer could possibly have drawn these up for any company. It seems that in VDJβs view, the buyer is responsible for absolute EVERYTHING! The seller does not take responsibility for anything. Even the lawyer to whom I showed these terms and conditions thought that they were completely biased in favour of the seller.
I have to say that based on their attitude - every step of the way - during the process, I found both Mrs. Terry De Jager, Director and Mr. De Jager to be the most obnoxious people I have ever come across in business. This was not a language issue, as they spoke English well.
It was my first experience of buying in the Netherlands and will be my last. Even in the early stages before I realized that the ring was NOT what they described, they were difficult to deal with. These people are the worst possible representation of dealing in another country. I have never encountered such abominable fraudulent behaviour by ANY auction house ANYWHERE.
Subsequently, when they refused to refund me, I contacted a Dutch lawyer, who wrote to them. They didnβt even have the courtesy of responding to the lawyer by letter. Such arrogance beggars belief! They are smug in the knowledge that getting justice for the customer would be challenging, if the value at stake is low, compared to the costs of getting access to the court system. It seems that items with a value below β¬25,000 are dealt with by a separate court in the Netherlands, the so called Sector Canton of the Court, where you would need a lawyer and a certified Dutch translator. It would probably cost me as much as the ring - to pursue by this process, taking flights etc. into consideration, but this is what VDJ are playing on. They are smug in the knowledge that it would be too inconvenient and costly for customers to take them to Court, so they simply say βno refunds,β regardless of the complete inaccuracy of their description (which in my opinion is fraudulent behaviour). Iβm a great believer in karma i.e. what goes around comes around!
I have no doubt that whilst VDJ may be ok to deal with when there is no problem, they are the worst of the worst when there is a problem. Absolutely NO CONSIDERATION FOR THEIR CUSTOMERS whatsoever. So short-sighted of them as one unhappy customer can tell the world how they feel, as I am now. Avoid this company at all costs!

β β β β β Obnoxiously arrogant and unreasonable! If they're so suspicious of their potential customers being able to pay or not, then just close shop and sell simple things for cash... like bitterballen!
