Both the famous Dutch artist Rembrandt van Rijn and the first Zaan clockmaker were sons of millers. The 17th century Cornelis Michielszoon Volger was a clockmaker who also had interests in the windmill industry. He used a new development in the construction of clocks, namely, the pendulum. Just as the application of the crankshaft enabled planks to be sawn industrially with the help of wind power, application of the pendulum was a decisive step in the production of clocks on a larger scale.

Good place for a family to spend about 30 minutes to an hour here.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Hotspot for tourism, around 30 mins from amsterdam centraal by train. Family & child friendly. Has real demo on creating klompen/wooden shoes, and on creating cheese. Can rent a bike, can do boat cruising, instagrammable spots.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ This is a small museum that is definitely worth a visit. The curator, Pier, is incredibly knowledgable about the history and culture of clockmaking in the Netherlands. We felt so fortunate that he took so much time to chat with us and answer our questions. He is also working on an additional exhibit that seems like it will be fantastic.
