De Werfkring is een van de oudste eetgelegenheden aan de historische Utrechtse grachtenwerven. Claziena Verdorst – bekend van het kookboek Aan Tafel bij Moeder Aarde – begon de Werfkring in 1976. In 1981 nam Namgyal Lhamo met haar zusje Chukie het restaurant over. Het menu is sindsdien nauwelijks veranderd. De producten die in de Werfkring gebruikt worden zijn zoveel mogelijk biologisch. Granen, kruiden, peulvruchten, gestoofde groente en rauwkost vormen nog steeds de basis van het menu. Namgyal bracht hier en daar ook een enkel accent aan uit de Indiase en Tibetaanse keuken.

We visited because Google had this listed as a child friendly place. However there were no facilities for kids (no play corner etc) and the place is right by the canal, with no barriers, and only accessible by a lot of stairs. It's a lovely location but not suitable for kids. While it's a vegetarian place, almost everything was egg based (pancakes etc) so no good for vegans. All in all, the wrong plane to take my toddler and me vegan friend!

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Fast, tasty food served with a smile. The concept is great, just a single menu item each day where you can select one of the two variations of the prepared food. Because of this concept, food is served out fast. Good for a quick meal.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ A wonderful little place for good, cheap vegetarian food. They have one menu for the day, with some variations for people with allergies (which you should mention 24 hours ahead of time, if applicable). The cuisine has Tibetan influences (as the chef is Tibetan).

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ The best vegetarian/vegan food in the Netherlands! Especially, if you are from Slavic country and miss your homemade hot dinners! I was so pleased and surprised to taste such food in the Netherlands. It’s not typical vegan fast food, but hot and homemade, yummy! The cooks are from Tibet. The waitress is helpful and understanding! We had soup and main dish in vegan variant. It’s a pity that the only dessert for vegans is fresh fruits. Overall, it was like at home! The best!!!!!

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Great place to taste different vegetarian food. Hosts are very kind and do all they can to make you happy. We ate outside on the canal and it was pouring down rain ... Still we kept it dry under their big umbrellas! Very tasty food... I warmly recommend this place! They don't sell alcohol, so of course is less crowded than many other restaurants/pub... But I actually appreciated this a lot!

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ This place is absolutely wonderful, definitely one of the most special spots that I know of, in Utrecht and in general. It’s a very peaceful friendly sphere. They cook something new everyday and you can order a mixed plate of the different things (usually some combo of 2 grains and different veggie stirfries/stews/sauces and salad). You can ask specifically for a vegan plate, most of the time only one of the sauces or something isn’t vegan but everything is always vegetarian. They also always have a really tasty soup of the day! Their desserts aren’t vegan yet unfortunately but she’s working on it!
Highly highly recommend!
