waren, moest men naar andere middelen grijpen
om bederfelijke waar langdurig te koelen. In
eerste instantie hakte men in de winter
natuurijs uit en bewaarde dit in zogenaamde
ijskelders gedurende de zomer. Vanaf 1860 was
men in staat kunstmatig ijs te fabriceren. In
1911 kreeg Gouda zijn eigen ijsfabriek. Toen de
moderne koeltechnieken hun intrede deden
werd de fabriek overbodig. De voormalige
ijsfabriek is nu een fraai vroeg industrieel pand
met bekroningen in art deco stijl.
