Echte Goudse historie. De Goudse kaarsen werden hier gemaakt. Een hele grote werkgever in Gouda. Met een heel beroemd en vernieuwend kwaliteits product. Een Goudse ontwikkeling. Naast kaarsen maakte ze ook zeep. Een van de reden dat er verderop aan de Vest een Asschuur was. As was nl een belangrijke grondstof. En werd vast wel geleverd aan een van de grote was- en blekerijen in Gouda. Zoals Het Wapen van Amsterdam aan de Bleekerssingel of De Drie Notenboomen aan de Kattensingel. De fabriek is door de jaren heen Unigema geworden, Uniquema en nu Croda. Een aantal woningen in de wijk heeft de fabriek laten bouwen. Er was ook nog soort van stadsverwarming de wijk in. Als vakantie werk heb ik paar jaar in het centraal magazijn gewerkt. En verbaasde mij er over hoe groot het was en dat ze zelfs een eigen brandweer hadden. De muur langs de fabriek is ook een Rijksmonument.

One of the reasons that there was an Ash barn further down the Vest. Ash was an important raw material. And it was probably delivered to one of the large washing and bleaching plants in Gouda. A number of houses in the district have had the factory built. There was also some sort of district heating in the district. As a holiday job I worked in the central warehouse for a few years. And I was amazed at how big it was and that they even had their own fire brigade. The wall along the factory is also a national monument.
