β β β β β Unfortunately the quality of the food has dropped since I last visited this place a few years ago. I could have rolled the sushi better at home - it was falling apart and in mismatched sizes - and there was a random piece of tomato and lettuce on the side of every dish which made the food very inauthentic... the beef was also overcooked and chewy. Additionally the staff serving us said about two words the entire time and apparently tap water doesn't exist in the place (I guess they don't have running water?). I used to really like Kagetsu - it has a nice venue and the food used to be great, but now it has some work to do.

β β β β β Salmon Sashimi was much too thick but not bad. The Maki rolls was not strong enough rolled so that they were falling apart before you could eat it. Teriyaki chicken was a bit over cooked Service was not so professional. As a place, nice and cozy

β β β β β Atmosphere: 5 stars - cozy and good location on 9 Straatjes. They have some tiny tables on the sidewalk now.
Cleanliness: 5 stars - they offer hand sanitizer and are taking covid restrictions seriously. I saw them sanitizer their hands before and after doing takeout orders
Service: 4 stars - Can be slower, but friendly and you just need to get their attention sometimes
Food: 4.5 stars - fresh fish and nice sized cuts, rolls arenβt rolled so tight but the taste makes up for it. Seafood salad is delicious too. Had the lunch bento box this time with the salmon roll, which was great but the dumplings were a bit overcooked - still good. Overall, the food is quality.

β β β β β A cozy nice little Japanese restaurant, offers variety of Japanese food. Due to Covid, we can only order the take away/delivery. Though the bento boxes are truly amazing, the katsu curry came with the perfect temperature that it did not required another heat up. The sushi is also amazing just as usual, tasty and great portion.
Updated as at 19/JUN/2021: Not sure if the chef has changed, the recent food quality has become very poor and the portion has shrunk as well. The sushi were falling apart and not fresh, especially the tamago nigiri tasted like as if itβs been inside the fridge for long time. Though the hot food still seemed okay, I guess I will need to find a new decent place in central for sushi.

β β β β β The chicken katsu with curry is amazing, chicken is very crunchy outside and tender on the inside. Sushi also tastes very fresh. Cozy interior. Definitely recommend!

β β β β β Kagetsu is a cosy Japanese restaurant in the heart of west Amsterdam.
The atmosphere is comfortable and quiet, nice seats with street view for the solo travellers and the food is good quality.
The serving possibly lacks that quintessential Japanese presentation, maybe itβs more westernised than it should (btw Iβm never in fav of westernisation of food), but itβs surely tasty, no big deal then.
The service, another major pillar for any review, is effective, discrete and timely, what else could one ask for?
In conclusion Kagetsu is a cool alternative to other more familiar cuisines if you are strolling through west Amsterdam and wondering where to have a bite.
Enjoy ?

β β β β β The only dedicated Japanese dining venue within the "9 Streets" area, Kagetsu is smaller than the average Japanese restaurant found in Amsterdam; It is however more cozy and intimate than most.
Translated into English, the name means: applaud, praise, esteem, happy and auspicious. From the floors to the beams, extensive use of wood has been made, combined with revealed brickwork along the main wall. There are a number of cozy seating areas, as well as a small outside terrace, ideal for alfresco dining for two when the weather is clement.
During the daytime, Kagetsu is popular for their assortment of takeaway Bento lunch boxes. In the evening, the menu features a tempting selection of starters, seafood and seaweed salads, sashimi, maki, nigiri, temaki, uramaki and special uramaki. Warm dishes include a reasonable offering of vegetarian dishes, chicken and pork curries, three kinds of tempura, chicken and salmon teriyaki and yakiniku beef in barbecue sauce. Sadly, there are no "all you can eat" options. There's a well stocked bar, star of which are the various sakΓ©s. Prices are not cheap but, at the same time, not unreasonable.
