★ ★ ★ ★ ★ This monument stands in tribute to Hugo de Groot, a 15th & 16th century was a Dutch jurist. He contribution was to lay the foundations for international law, based on natural law instead of the law of might based on force or warfare.
This sculpture sits on Korte Voorhout just outside the Supreme Court of Netherlands and is part of a sculptural ensemble that includes other well known Dutch jurists.The sculpture depicts a seated de Groot, dressed as a gentleman of the 16th century. In his left hand he holds a book of law, which he is point at with two fingers of his right hand. The statue is not really part of main tourist circuit in Den Haag, so I wouldn't go out of the way to visit unless you're already planning on visiting the Supreme Court.
