Torensluis, on the Singel canal, also known as "Bridge 9", is the oldest of Amsterdam's 1,281 bridges (each one is numbered), having been constructed in the first half of the 17th century. At 42 metres, it is also the city's widest. Originally, there was a water lock and a tower which was demolished in the last decade of the 19th century. Today, the bridge houses the Multatuli statue from the author of Max Havelaar, a novel which was to have a significant influence on Dutch colonial policy. The statue is likely the city's most photographed monument, attracting visitors from all over the world. Much of the rest of the bridge is covered by the numerous benches, tables, chairs and parasols from the external terraces of the surrounding bars, cafes and restaurants, making this one of the city's premier meeting places and hangouts. Most however have no idea as to what lurks underneath. If you look from the side of the bridge, you can still see the original entrances. The left-hand arch closest to Spuistraat was, at one time, used as a prison for petty criminals. The cells, it is claimed, sometimes flooded at high tide. The ultimate punishment must have been the winter time with sub zero temperatures. During the cold war, the space functioned as a listening post and has seen a variety of usages since.

Torensluis (Bridge 9) is an arch bridge that spans the Singel at the Oude Leliestraat in the Amsterdam City Center. The bridge is the oldest in Amsterdam that is preserved in its original state, its presence dating from 1648. The bridgehead still preserves the dungeons in the original construction and the early foundations and cobblestones are visible.
