About Valkenburg Castle Ruins

Whenever I visit Valkenburg I also will visit these Castle Ruins. Valkenburg Castle is a castle ruin in the South Limburg fortified town of Valkenburg. The high-altitude castle, which is rare for the Netherlands, is located on the Heunsberg, an offshoot of the Margraten plateau. The castle, once the stronghold of the lords of Valkenburg, was destroyed in 1672 but never completely demolished. Below the castle are several escape corridors and the Castle Quarry. The Valkenburg castle ruins are an important tourist attraction and have been a protected national monument since 1967. It always is a happy occasion and an experience to visit here.

Booked tickets online to visit the castle. Though it was convenient, we had to pay a little bit more to visit the Velvet Cave too. Tip: If you want to visit both the ruins and the cave, there is a kiosk where the Velvet Cave (Fluweelengrot) is located & they sell the combined tickets there. It wasn't possible to book that kind of ticket online. The ruins were interesting & needs a whole lot of imagining when you start reading the descriptions. Worth the visit.

Easy experience to get in. Tickets available through kiosk. Museumkaart holders can scan directly at the turnstile. Audio guide available on your own phone using free wifi. But the program is mostly repeating what you can read on the signs which are in Dutch and English. Nice views.

Great free stop with the Museumkaart. Very glad they had an elevator to get up the first hill, and the rest wasn't too bad. Great views of the city and lots of fun seeing the ruins of such an amazing old building. Was also fun to see all the old inscriptions in the stone from prior visitors ? Was just missing a souvenir shop ?
