★ ★ ★ ★ ★ The true heart of Maastricht. Many cafes at different price points as well as good wheelchair accessible parking. Public art works on display, and frequent concerts and events. Watch out for the bike lane that crosses through the middle and enjoy the wide promenade throught he terraces. Gezellig, historic and nice on a sunny day.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Always magical to be on Vrijthof during the winter.
This is a really beautiful Christmas market with a giant ferris wheel.
Quite a big ice skating rink you can find in the middle.
Lots of food places but not so many bars unfortunately. This I like more in Belgian and German Christmas markets.

You can find many restaurants that accomodate all culinary tastes as well as some of the main attractions of the city, like Basiliek van Sint Servaas or Sint-Janskerk. Public toilets and parking also available. Good for a relaxing stroll coupled with sightseeing.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ We were there for the carnival and it simply was a magical day. In the same line as king's day, but for carnival people go above and beyond to dress up with all kind of dresses. Almost a huge Halloween. The square turns into a big party with bright colours, loud local music to the tunes of famous pop songs.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ A beautiful square very often used for all sorts of protests and awareness campaigns. The square is surrounded by little diners and close to a variety of lifestyle and clothing stores, supermarkets and a variety of musea.
