Great location is the only good can be said about this place. With a stairs where you risk your live every time you go to the bath, with no kind of wardrobe or hangers in the room, a blanket that seems to be the nest of a diverse wildlife (yes, me and my girl got bitten too), only the staff gets abate the bad impressions. Try to avoid it if you can.

Hostel The Veteran is my favourite place to stay in Amsterdam Central. It's actually not a hostel but hotel only. It has 2 - 5 seater rooms so no issues for number of people visiting Breakfast is always included Best part is location. You see Canal and bridge view from your window. Night life is on other side of the veteran. Overall amazing place to stay :)

Great choice for a budget traveller! Even though the stairs were hard to climb, the ceiling was too low and the bathroom was shared with all the other rooms, I found my staying at The Veteran quite pleasurable. Located in an old dutch house in the heart of Amsterdam, it covers a traveller's basic needs: a bed to sleep in and a place to leave the luggage. The staff was polite and the breakfast was nourishing. I didn't like the fact that the heating & cleaning stopped after the first two days.

Stayed here for a budget couple's holiday, and it was much nicer than expected. + very good price for the location. It was the cheapest place in central Amsterdam, and we saved a lot of money thanks to the fair price and easy walking distance to everywhere in the city. There are bars and clubs all around, and a really nice view of the canals. Even the mayor lives on this street apparently! + despite other reviews, I found it very clean - the sheets were nice, they gave us fresh towels every day, and there was a sink and mirror in the bedroom. I was dreading the shared bathroom situation but it was not bad at all, I never had to queue and it always seemed clean in the shared shower / loo. Also there was a TV in the room, which was a nice addition I wasn't expecting. Also a hair dryer and safe, but no wardrobe. + the breakfast is nothing fancy, but still much appreciated. Sliced bread, ham and cheese slices, a fruit bowl, cereal and yogurt were available, with tea / coffee making, juice and milk, and a toaster / microwave. Great to have a free meal included for the already low price + the staff were very helpful and friendly and spoke perfect English. Whenever I saw them, they were helping people with breakfast or with extra loo paper for the bathroom, or looking after bags even after checkout. The receptionist even chased us out to give us a bag we had forgotten. Very nice people. - the only real problem with my stay was the fact that mosquitoes were in the room and I was bitten a lot. (I have noticed this with more expensive hotels also, though). if you're staying in the summer, pack repellent or spray! - since it is right above a square of clubs, restaurants and cannabis shops, it can be very noisy at night, especially on the weekend, even into the early hours. We slept right through it since our days were so busy, but be warned not to expect perfect peace and quiet. - the stairs are very, very steep and narrow. This is a given in many Dutch houses, but be weary if you struggle with stairs. Overall, this is a great choice for a low budget hotel. Good for students or backpackers. Just remember to bring bug spray!

The location is as prime, no doubt about it. The rooms were alright. They smelled of pot, the refrigerator didn't work, the shower didn't drain hardly, door squeaked like crazy and there was no air conditioning. The staff were very nice and had a great sense of humor. They did my laundry for 5 euro which was much appreciated. Breakfast wasn't anything fancy but it taste good and they were polite and helpful.

Tiny hotel, with tiny and simple rooms. But you get everything you need for an Amsterdam party trip. A simple breakfast is included but never tried it. I recommend it if you only look for a cheap place to sleep! Don't forget to book private shower/toilette if possible. I do not like shared shower/toilette :)
